What we say
Rostock Ritz was opened in 1998 by the well-known Swakopmund restauranteur, Kucki Kuhhirt (of Kucki’s Pub), as a means of escaping the grey, misty weather of the coast and as a nature retreat. It’s located close to the Gaub Pass and is a convenient stop between either the coast or Windhoek if travelling on to Sossusvlei. The lodge is designed out of igloo-shaped structures that sit comfortably within the rocky landscape. It is not a luxury lodge but rather somewhere to soak up the vast vistas of the Namib and have time to enjoy the tranquillity of the desert.
After managing the lodge for six years at the beginning of the millennium, Hein and Yvonne fell in love with this area. In 2019 they became the new owners. Their passion for Rostock is clear – from Yvonne’s attention to the comfort of her guests to Hein’s knowledgeable guiding skills.
The lodge consists of 11 rock igloos that house 16 standard rooms and 3 suites. There is 24-hour solar-powered electricity, and each room has a ceiling fan. The rooms are simple but comfortable, with extensive views of the desert plains below and the Rostock Mountains. The main communal area has a large terrace where you can enjoy a cold beer. Meals are serviced within the cavern-like dining area or can be taken on the terrace. Slightly away from the main area is a pool and bar, perfect for sundowner drinks and taking it easy.
There are ten different hiking trails on the property that vary in length to suit all levels of fitness and enthusiasm. These come with information booklets either in English or German and a GPS device. Other activities include a sundowner drive, a night drive to see the ‘shy 5’, hot-air ballooning on request, and a 4 hour guided tour of the bushman paintings.
What they say (the facts!)
At Rostock Ritz you can let your soul sing to the rhythms of nature and grasp the ultimate “Out of Africa” – feeling.
This is…about enjoying a pleasant stroll and exploring nature and wildlife along unique riverbeds and mountain slopes, hidden bushman paintings and the red sand dunes of the Namib.
Why we like it
Rostock Ritz is a great option for people who have a more relaxed itinerary, have a love of nature and enjoy beautiful desert surroundings.
