What we say

Barkhan Dune Retreat is situated on the edge of the Namib Desert, at the foot of the spectacular Spreetshoogte Pass. The views back to the central plateau and over the desert plains are breathtaking. We received a warm welcome from the lodge managers, Niekie & Gerda and two baby meerkats that had just been rescued on a neighbouring farm. They (the meerkats not the managers) were happily squealing and whistling as they settled into their new home.

Barkhan Dune is independently owned, with dedicated and friendly managers. The lodge is eco-friendly with a comprehensive solar system (with an impressive array of batteries), borehole water and a water recycling plant. Materials that can be recycled are transported back to Windhoek (the nearest recycling centre) while food waste is composted and used (along with recycled water) on the lodge gardens.

This is a simple friendly and un-assuming lodge, that offers three varieties of accommodation.

Barkhan Dune Chalets – is a traditional lodge with well-equipped rooms, a feature here is the sliding doors that can be opened to offer wide views over the Namib.
KuanguKuangu – an isolated private unit about 1km from the main lodge. It’s a good (if somewhat rustic) remote hide-away and has basic self-catering facilities (although meals can be eaten at the lodge).
Okanti – a larger self-catering house.  It has a well equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms, lounge and raised balcony. Great for families or groups of friends.

Barkhan Dune Retreat is on the outer limits from where one can comfortably do a day self-drive to Sossusvlei. We would suggest spending a night somewhere closer to the dunes and then spending a couple of nights at Barkhan to relax in a quiet, comfortable environment. The lodge can also be used to break up the drive from Windhoek to Sossusvlei.

What they say (the facts!)

On your way to Sossusvlei in the heart of the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, you will find Barkhan Dune Retreat, uniquely built into the side of a Barkhan dune with elegantly furnished rooms and unmatched hospitality.
Stay with us for a couple of days and relax and enjoy the serenity of the mountains and the beauty of the Namib region; boundless views over our valley from the veranda of your room, abundant birdlife during the day and an unmatched view of the stars in the clear Namibian skies at night.

In summary

This lodge is perhaps not for everyone – if you are on a tight schedule and are rushing around attempting to tick off Namibia’s main attractions, give it a miss. If you are a more chilled traveller who wants to enjoy the desert, either by relaxing at the lodge or on one of the hikes or bike rides then this is a good lodge for you!
