What we say
The Alternative Space is our favourite little B&B in Swakopmund. Not your average accommodation establishment it started life before Namibian Independence as an anti-establishment art gallery. Then after independence, transformed into a very popular backpackers hostel before settling into life as Namibia’s most ‘alternative’ bed and breakfast.
The hosts are Frenus and Sybille a charming and intriguing couple. Sybille, a German national visited Namibia and never left, first falling deeply in love with the Alternative Space; and then sometime later with Frenus. She is the brains of the operation running a tight ship. Frenus, is an architect, and always up for profound thought-provoking conversations. Together they strike the perfect balance available when needed but affording enough space when required.
What they say (the facts!)
Providing accommodation to interested people was a natural progression in the life of the gallery. With its extensive collection of Namibian art and photography, liberally exhibited in all the rooms, white washed walls, beautiful gardens with green lawns, palm trees, banana and olive trees, the Alternative Space accommodation that is conducive of friendship, sensuality and romance.
With only four individually designed and decorated non-smoking en-suite rooms, each guest is assured of special attention. Sibylle’s motto is that every little detail is important, and nothing is ever a problem. Her philosophy is most noticeable in the outstanding buffet breakfast with all the fresh German delicacies that can be enjoyed at leisure from 7 till noon.
